When Mummies and Daddies Do It Differently

  • Posted on September 2, 2010 at 1:32 pm

I’ve been struggling a lot recently with the fact that us mamas have to multitask, while the dads seem to find it a little harder, to say the least!

I can cook a full dinner, put on a wash, hang up the washing and wash a few dishes all while my daughter toddles around the kitchen amusing herself with her toys, hangs off my legs, cries to be picked up and generally goes about her day. I’ve even been known to pop her on the counter to breastfeed while I’ve been cooking.

Impressions of Oslo, Norway

I recently spent some time in Oslo, Norway, visiting my sister, and found the city to be child-friendly, family-centred and I generally enjoyed being there.

Our weeks are sometimes so diverse, it’s hard to find a common theme. This is one of those weeks. From Folkstone to Norway, a bit of London, some nature and some routine, but always two constants: the people I love in the life we live.

This is definitely the Spring Edition of A Week in Pictures. We have had some mild temperatures, but a lot of rain still. I’ve been trying to get out of the house a bit more, so we’ve been out and about most days this week.

Said the Bitch to the Cow

As a species, women are quite hard to understand. There, I said it.

We fill the complete spectrum with our differences, yet at our basic core, we are not all that dissimilar. We all have basic needs of love, acceptance, belonging and so on.

Why, then, do we bash each other, berate each other’s viewpoints and pile on guilt where extra isn’t needed?

A Sling is a Wonderful Thing

Before I became pregnant, I had never given a moment’s thought to the transportation of babies. They go in push chairs, and that’s where they go. Or so I thought.  It was only on walking into a popular baby shop that I became aware of the range of options, and found that none were going to work for us.

Not only would it be impossible to get most of the tank-with-tractor-wheel travel systems up our staircase (we live on the first floor), but we didn’t have anywhere to store it even if we could. And that’s assuming we could even afford one in the first place.

On the 21st of this month, I will have lived in the UK for 7 years. Of that 7 years, I will have lived in London for 4 1/2 years. I was looking through some photo albums recently, when it dawned on me that living here, I’d never taken photos of those ‘iconically British’ things – the post box, the telephone box and the Routemaster Bus. So, inbetween my normal activities, I kept an eye out for these and managed to complete the set pretty quickly. So, in celebration of my 7 year montheversary, here are some iconic London moments taken over the last week.

Packing the Perfect Nappy Bag

  • Posted on March 1, 2010 at 4:07 pm

Before my daughter was born I was given a great large nappy bags, with pockets and pouches for everything. It really was one of those ‘everything but the kitchen sink’ bags, and I was thrilled. Then she was born, and I steadily began to loathe that bag! I could never find anything, no matter how much I tried to keep the compartments separate, and keep ‘a place for everything and everything in its place’. It was impossible, and it was heavy!

As a baby wearer, I found that the nappy bag was heavier than the baby, and was really weighing me down. Sometimes we’d go out for an hour or two, and I’d lug the bag around with me, and never actually use it! Something had to be done!

Playing a bit of catch up here, as I’ve not had time to edit and post photos in a while!
