Tommee Tippee Closer to Nature Breast Pump – A Review

  • Posted on August 23, 2010 at 8:24 am

When I started breastfeeding, my mother recommended that I pump when my daughter, Kyra, was sleeping so as to encourage milk production. I seemed to spend the first six weeks feeding and pumping, feeding and pumping. The upside of this is that my husband was able to feed Kyra in the evenings from time to time so that I could catch up on sleep. The end result of that was that I have always had plenty of milk supply both on hand and in the freezer!

Another NIP Outrage and Why It Matters

I don’t normally run commentary on news stories, but the story in the Manchester Evening News today really got me (and a lot of other people) a little bit riled up.

Nursing in Public or Just Nursing?

Welcome to the July 2010 Carnival of Nursing in Public This post was written for inclusion in the NursingFreedom.org. All week, July 5-9, we will be featuring articles and posts about nursing in public (“NIP”). See the bottom of this post for more information. ***

People say your life changes when you have a baby and I guess they’re right. The way I see it, though, your perceptions change and because of that, your life changes. I must admit I never thought about breastfeeding much. Why would you, really? Looking back, however, I can’t remember if I ever thought I would or wouldn’t breastfeed, in public or otherwise.

Natural Recipes – Breast Milk Enhancement Tea

It always saddens me so much when someone says that they had to quit breastfeeding at six weeks because their milk dried up. It also maddens me, because I think health care professionals should explain to people how it all works.  For the first six weeks your milk reservoirs, so that you  have a constant supply – then it ‘dries up’ but it doesn’t really dry up, it just becomes available on demand and might not respond well to expressing either! know it’s frightening, it was to me too, but this concoction of herbs really helped improve my flow and I was able to go on. Armed with this knowledge, I’m almost certain more people would be able to feed for longer.

The first few weeks of motherhood passed in a blur for me. It was an amazing high, and I was elated with my amazing birth experience. I was in love with my baby and I loved breastfeeding her from the very beginning. Within minutes of birth she fed for the first time, and she’s still going.

Comebacks for Breastfeeding Comments

I have an eight month old daughter, Kyra, who is still primarily breastfed, although we do play at Baby Led Weaning once or twice a day. Below are some of the questions I’ve been asked and my responses to them, or that other people have been asked and what I would have said had it been me.

I find that people generally ask annoying and otherwise offensive questions out of ignorance, a lack of understanding or misconceptions brought about by lack of experience. Most of the time these retorts, when accompanied by a sincere face and a bright smile, put a quick stop to the line of questioning without any animosity.

Five Great Things About Breast Milk

Breastmilk has been touted as the wonder drink. We’ve all heard how good it is for babies, and we all know that babies who have been breastfed are said to be healthier, less obese as children, and less fussy eaters than formula fed babies. We also know that breastfeeding is good for mothers. It reduces the risk of breast cancer, helps with wait loss and can help prevent post partum depression.

Even so, I am often surprised by the things that people don’t know about breastmilk. Here are a few of my favourites:

My husband and I walked through the fairground in our local park one afternoon and he kept looking at passers by, then looking fleetingly at my chest and grimacing. When I eventually asked him why he was behaving so strangely, he told me that he was concerned that people might think he was abusing me! I looked down to see what he could see and realised how right he was. The area between my neck and bosom was various shades of blues, greens and browns, with a few mean-looking scratch marks thrown in for good measure.
