365-223 to 365- 229 A Week in Pictures

For the time being our weeks have taken on a distinctly domestic flavour. We’re preparing for our next trip in October, so laying low for the moment, saving up and living frugally. But even so, friends need to be seen, family visited and life must continue, so the odd slow at home day is always a pleasure.

All good things come to an end, and while our week started in Austria and moved on to Germany, it ended at home amidst a mountain of laundry and a lot of ‘to do’s.

Week seven of our travels, and it’s all coming to a rapid end. We can feel the road weariness slowly inveloping us – strange having just spent a week relaxing like we’ve not done on any other holiday.  We’ve seen great things this week and learned a lot about Western preconceptions about things we really know nothing or little about.

Just Have to Share – Bosnian Borek (Meat Pitas)

  • Posted on July 25, 2010 at 8:00 am

We spent last week with my sister and her boyfriend and his family in Croatia, where his Bosnian mother cooked us three meals a day unless we went out. She doesn’t speak a word of English so conversation was a non-starter, making getting recipes out of her very difficult so I have pieced this one together as best as I could.  Bosnians, or at least these Bosnians, eat a very different diet to ours, with at least two courses and bread at each sitting. In addition, their meals are really heavy – in sweltering heat we were still consuming hot pots and soups.

10 Ways to Stretch Your Holiday Money

My husband, nine-month old daughter and I have been travelling around for nine weeks all told this summer. We have camped, stayed in hotels and cabins and for one week, with family. Here are some of the top things we have done to stretch our budget as far as possible:

We’ve spent this week going from one beautiful place to the next. We are so blessed in this time of our lives.

The Camping Kitchen

As much as I love camping, little is more frustrating than trying to make food in the middle of nowhere only to find you don’t have the right equipment. It’s like cooking in someone else’s kitchen: it’s really hard and the food doesn’t taste as good. Unless you are prepared and comfortable with your equipment, that is.

Tips for Travelling with a Baby

We’re travellers at heart, really. Over the years we’ve covered most means of transport and stayed in every standard of accommodation imaginable. Most recently, at 7.5 months pregnant we camped in England. Then, when our daughter Kyra was 5 days old, we travelled to Bath to visit the in-laws. At 11 days we stayed in a hotel with my parents, and a good few trips in between, at 8 months, she had her first camping experience.

We have had another fantastic week of travel and visitors. We have been so blessed, and my Dad, Mom and Brother deserve a huge thank you for making all this possible for us. We could not have managed this holiday for ourselves at this time, much less given my gran such an amazing time.  My gran has been on my ‘best friend’ list since I was a child. She’s never been one of those cuddly, spoiling us kind of grans, but she has always been fair and just and she’s always been there for me, been my advocate and really ‘seen’ me.

There are so many ways where we are so different, but I’ve always felt like I could go to her with anything I needed to. Having this time to share with her, and seeing her bond with my daughter and being able to show her the land her own grandmother walked on, the town she lived and so on has meant more to me than I can ever relay in words. Thank you Mom, Dad & Ziech for making this possible.

Another week as we travel around, staying local now. By local I mean staying in the UK. This is precious time, my gran tells me about our family, our history, her family, her childhood. Things I’ve  never heard. Things I’ll forget again until I need to remember one day. I learn her favourite song. What she wants played at her funeral. I learn about her marriage to a grandfather I never knew. Precious moments, while she whispers to my daughter, when she pretends to be the South Easter (wind), blowing in her face, making her giggle.
